Chapter Seven

His mate was a killer.

There, it rang again inside Adam’s head as he watched Justin and Craig trot down the veranda stairs and quickly deal with a body. And by deal, he meant dragging the body over to an already burnt out area before pulling out the leftover branches that hadn’t quite disintegrated and covering the body with that, then grabbing some green stuff and pilling that on top.

Then, flames. It lit quickly and efficiently, and smelt of a bush fire within minutes.

His mate was a killer, Adam thought again as he descended the stair with everyone else, walking as a group in silence over to the two men standing watching the fire destroy the body.

Again, and again, his mind sang the tune, his mate was a killer. Yeah, it might have been trying to get him to truly see what he should already know, especially now, with an actual body right there, burning away, a secret no one present would tell.

Adam’s mate was a killer.

That mouthful of reality tasted sour as he tried to work out why it wasn’t bothering him. Was he suicidal? Was he a little girl in her rebellion streak?

No, he was trusting. Chris was always going on and on about that, and what he saw and how he dealt with the world at large.

What shocked Adam wasn’t the fact his mate was a killer. He’d known that. It just happened to be the first time he’d seen it. He’d seen that cold look on Justin’s face and the mechanics of his body as he played and then took down his target. He hadn’t heard what the men had said, at least not what Craig and Justin had said. He’d turned his ears from the spewing hatred, but it all hit too close to home for him to ignore it completely.

So was that what was getting at him? Not that his mate killed a man, but that something in Adam had been satisfied to have it all stop, to have someone who spat hatred at others for no reason be killed, ended like they all should be? Was that it? A wish and prayer he’d been trying to get someone to hear, finally played out by a man Adam saw as his protection in life, as his one good thing that would turn the world upside down for him.

The protector part might have been true, but the rest not so much. Even if he wished he were that sort of man, he wasn’t. He didn’t believe in killing, nor did he wish he could say people deserved what they got. No, it seemed the better answer was that Adam didn’t want to see Justin as anything but the man he would spend the rest of his life with, and because he didn’t see the importance of losing his someone special over the enemy, he let everything else fall away and stepped up next to that very man.
